A few years ago, I met a young boy at one of the lowest points in his life while he was still in school. Today, he lives alone in Gwalior, staying in a library in exchange for cleaning the place, and relying on temple meals to survive. Despite these challenges, he is determinedly preparing for a competitive exam, though he often wonders how much longer he can endure this hardship. When we gave him a book he desperately needed but couldn't afford, his joy was palpable. I truly hope he makes the most of it and that his dreams come true soon.

At the end of our mental health awareness camp at DD Mall, something memorable happened. A store manager from one company mentioned that another manager from a different company, who had attended a brief counseling session earlier, felt a sense of peace and recommended the camp to him. He then opened up to us and expressed that he felt much better afterward. We had meaningful conversations with many people, including a teenage boy who works at the mall. He recently lost his father and had just started working to support his family. He was struggling with suicidal thoughts. A group of teenage beneficiaries and volunteers from the Heartbeat Foundation met up for pizza at Domino's. During our gathering, I asked them whether they preferred childhood or teenage years. Unanimously, they chose childhood, citing the carefree fun it offered. We discussed how each stage of life has its advantages and disadvantages. Unlike childhood, where fun comes naturally, as teenagers, we need to actively plan for recreation. Moreover, we acknowledged that striving towards goals can help manage stress levels effectively.

Despite the rainy weather in Gwalior, we were able to gather six underprivileged boys. With a decent budget in hand, I inquired about their desires, and all of them expressed a wish for new footwear. We crammed them into my car and headed to a footwear store, where each of them picked out their own pair. It was a novel experience for them, as they had never been to such a showroom before, let alone purchased anything from it. Afterwards, they expressed a craving for masala dosa at the Indian coffee house, but unfortunately, street kids were not welcome there. Undeterred, we decided to get it parcelled and handed it over to them. It turned out to be a memorable evening filled with small joys and heartfelt gestures.

27-06-23 Caring People and Respectful funeral
Two weeks ago, during a food distribution event called "roti seva," one of our volunteers drew my attention to an elderly man who was struggling to eat his rotis (Indian bread). I noticed that he had a large growth on his neck. Upon further inquiry, I discovered that he had no one to look after him. In response, I quickly took a photo of him and informed the Ashram Swarg Sadan, an organization that provides support for the elderly. They arranged for the man to be transferred to Apna Ghar in Bharatpur.
Today, I received a call from Apna Ghar informing me that the man was in the advanced stage of thyroid cancer and had passed away at 4:35 p.m. This news saddened me deeply, but I took solace in the fact that he had people who cared for him and that he received a respectful funeral, which is a basic human right. As the Heartbeat Foundation Family, we considered it a privilege to take care of the expenses for his funeral.

A few days ago, I received a phone call from a teacher at a government primary school in a village I had visited several months ago. Upon seeing our update about "roti seva" (serving bread), she expressed her intention to make 100 rotis. Understanding that it would be a challenging task, I requested her to be our special host. I now kindly request all of you to share this video as a status update so that many others may be inspired to do the same. Today, we were able to feed 140 people at the Morar District Hospital in Gwalior. A big thank you to all the individuals who participated in the "roti seva" initiative.

Yesterday, the weather was unpredictable, but our team remained determined to set up a mental health awareness camp at Katoratal, Gwalior. Despite many people being hesitant to engage with us, we were still able to interact with 40 individuals during our two-hour presence there. Among them, 35% reported a loss of interest, 30.4% experienced sleeping issues, 48% had consistent low mood, 26% faced digestive problems, 43% exhibited irritability, 48% had difficulty in focusing, 43% felt hopelessness, 30% experienced a change in appetite, 39% felt lonely, and 13% expressed having suicidal thoughts. Four of them even booked our free counseling session.
Given that India holds the unfortunate title of being the world suicide capital, it is of utmost importance to raise awareness about mental health. We, at the Heartbeat Foundation, are fully committed to this cause and actively seek out new opportunities to reach out to people. Please visit our website for valuable self-care tips.
Thanks to Sandeep Joy, Rishi Nath, Deepak Yadav, Anusar Jadon & Mrityunjay Sharma for volunteering at this camp along with me.
26-05-2023 - Social Support and Positive Connection
I recall discussing the counseling session I had last Tuesday with a teenager who was feeling suicidal. I was expecting a call from him on Sunday, but he surprised me by calling today instead. Fortunately, I had some free time this evening, which worked out well since we have a mental health awareness camp scheduled for this Sunday. I went to his house to pick him up, and the first question I asked him was whether he had cried since our last meeting. He replied with a “no."
We had planned to go to the mall, so we headed straight to the third floor. However, he mentioned that he wasn't hungry and just wanted to talk. I suggested we get some Mojitos to drink, but I also remembered that two weeks ago, one particular outlet only packed half of what I had paid for in a takeaway order. So, I made a point to visit that outlet and collected the other half as well. As we started snacking, he opened up to me, sharing that he had gone to the area near the train tracks twice in the past 15 days with the intention of ending his life, but somehow couldn't go through with it.
I reminded him of the advice I had given him during our last session and emphasized that the moment he decides to turn things around, he will start to feel better.
Curious, I asked him when he was planning to make that decision, and he replied that he would decide very soon. However, I sensed that he had already made up his mind when he chose not to visit the area near the girl, even though his whole family was going there. During our conversation, I noticed tears welling up in his eyes, but as we reached the end, there were more smiles and laughter.
As I dropped him back at his house, I could sense a positive shift in his demeanor. Despite the difficulties he was facing, there was a glimmer of hope shining through.
26-05-2023 Psychological Counselling Session at Office
A young couple married for two years came for counselling. I generally do not provide couples counseling, but when Dr. Mahi referred a couple to me this morning, I agreed because they were both under 25 years of age. I started the session by asking each of them as to how they got to know each other, and as they shared their love story, it seemed like they momentarily forgot about their conflicts. From that point on, it became much easier for me to facilitate open communication and work towards resolving their issues. Helped sort out matter and the boy requested to be the volunteer of Heartbeat Foundation.
25-05-2023 Psychological Counselling Session at Office
I had a counseling session with a final year medical student who was feeling suicidal. Despite being in a toxic relationship with her boyfriend, she was unwilling to let go. I had to explain to her that her boyfriend had actually done her a favor by breaking up with her because she hadn't taken the necessary steps herself. We also discussed the reasons why she should refrain from self-harm. She felt rejected and had extremely low self-esteem simply because her boyfriend ended the relationship. She even expressed thoughts of being unimportant to others and believing herself to be a bad person. I had to emphasize that she needed to prioritize her own self-worth first, as only then would others recognize her importance.
Before leaving she said she is she feels good after sharing her heart as she has no one to share her heart with.

23-05-2023 Psychological Counselling Session at Office
Earlier in the day, I had the opportunity to counsel seven teenagers at the observation home. Afterward, as I arrived at my office, a young girl was waiting for her counselling session. She was burdened by an overwhelming amount of pain following her 19-year-old brother's tragic suicide earlier this year.
In our session, I asked her if she wished to continue carrying the weight of this pain. Her response was a resounding "obviously not." Recognising the importance of choice, I presented her with an alternative perspective: she could either spend her life consumed by regret for the years she won't have with her brother or choose to be grateful for the 19 years she did share with him.
Furthermore, I reassured her that she should not blame herself for what had transpired, as I observed her grappling with various stages of grief, shifting back and forth. She even expressed the belief that her brother might still be alive had he met me. Sensing the weight of guilt in her words, I gently reminded her that dwelling on "what if's" is not productive or healthy.
Throughout our sessions, we engaged in numerous conversations that I must hold confidential. However, it was immensely gratifying to witness her leave my office with a lighter heart and a greater sense of happiness.
As I reflect on my day, I realise the significance of the strange thought that crossed my mind after l the suicidal teenage boy and the sister who had lost her teenage brother to suicide. The thought was rooted in the understanding that sometimes the impact we have on others' lives cannot be recognised .
23-05-2023 Psychological Counselling at Boys Observation Home
Today was the day for counselling sessions at the observation home. Counselled seven teenagers today at boys observation home and out of them 6 were for follow up counselling session.
A 16-year-old boy came for his fifth counseling session. During the session, I realized that he was still struggling with his broken love affair. Concerned for his well-being, I asked him if he had ever thought about committing suicide. Sadly, he admitted that he had contemplated it earlier in the day.
To approach the situation cautiously, I suggested that we evaluate the pros and cons of such a decision before moving forward. He agreed, so I asked him to consider the potential benefits of committing suicide. He responded by saying that it would be better than living a suffocated life.
I then shared with him that many people have experienced broken love affairs and have managed to move on, eventually living fulfilling lives. I emphasized that the pain he feels now doesn't necessarily mean it will persist forever. It's possible to find relief and a life free from suffocation in the future.
I continued by challenging his assumption that death would automatically grant him an escape from pain. I asked him to consider the possibility of an afterlife, where he might end up in either heaven or hell. If he were to end up in hell, he would potentially face even more suffering than he is experiencing now.
Furthermore, I asked him to reflect on the impact his decision would have on his parents. While he believed they would eventually recover from his loss, I reminded him that the depth of a parent's love is immeasurable. I also highlighted the fact that his feelings for the girl were relatively new compared to the lifelong love he had for his parents. What he perceived as love might be more accurately described as attraction fueled by hormonal changes.
Recognising his need for emotional support, I inquired whether he had anyone he could confide in. Unfortunately, he replied that he didn't have anyone to share his feelings with.
To address his social isolation, I asked if he ever had the opportunity to go out and enjoy himself at places like the mall. He revealed that he resided in Gwalior with his uncle, who restricted his outings.
With the aim of providing him with a positive experience and connection, I offered to pick him up the following Sunday evening to dine at a nice restaurant. He agreed to this gesture and made a promise not to commit suicide. At that moment, a peculiar thought crossed my mind - his parents would never realize the impact I had on their lives today.

25-4-2023 Psychological Counselling at Boys Observation Home
Yesterday, I provided counseling to five teenagers who were out on bail and one inmate at a boys' observation home. Additionally, last Saturday, I met with a juvenile who was released on bail in 2020 and sought my assistance due to a broken romantic relationship and drug addiction. The juvenile also comes from a dysfunctional household. Currently, the juvenile requires admission to a De-addiction center, but the only available option costs 8K per month, which is unaffordable for his family. Moreover, they may not be willing to pay even if they could. I am grateful that the juvenile reached out for help, and I advised him to avoid the negative company. If you come across any Deaddiction center that provides free services or substantial discounts, please inform me. I have requested Dr. Shaleen Sharma's assistance in this matter.

18-4-2023 Psychological Counselling at Boys Observation Home
Today, during my counseling sessions with six juveniles in conflict with the law, I posed my usual question, "Are you happy?" One of the young boys, who had lost his father at an early age, expressed that he was not happy because he lives in uncertainty about his next meal every day. Moved by his plight, I suggested that he volunteer at an organization run by one of my close friends, which happened to be located near his residence. I assured him that this way, he would not have to worry about where his next meal would come from. Soon after, I received a call from my friend after meeting this boy, assuring me that he would make the necessary arrangements. To maintain confidentiality, I will refrain from disclosing any identities.

SUICIDE ABORTED : 03-04-2023
Last night, I was jolted awake by a notification on my phone at 1:30 A.M. When I checked it, I saw a message from someone I recognized - a juvenile delinquent I had met twelve years ago when he was just 17. He informed me that he had suffered a loss of 40 lakh Rupees and was contemplating suicide. After spending about 20 minutes learning more about his situation, I offered him advice on how he could minimize his losses, drawing from my background in commerce. Above all, I reassured him that there is always a way out of any problem, no matter how stuck one may feel. The ultimate reason why people resort to suicide is often the absence of someone to confide in. I am grateful that he reached out in the midst of his loneliness and despair.

Psychological Counselling at Boys' Observation Home : 21-03-2023
Yesterday, I provided counseling to five teenagers in conflict with law at a boys' observation home. One of the teenagers I worked with was a 17-year-old who attended his final counseling session. However, at the conclusion of our session, he expressed a desire to continue meeting with me on Tuesdays as he felt uplifted by our interactions. I recall that this is the same young man who previously made excuses to avoid counseling sessions. I was pleased to learn that he has started working and is contributing to his family. During our session, we discussed the importance of obtaining a PAN card once he turns 18, which will enable him to open a bank account. Additionally, we talked about the process of obtaining a driver's license. As his counselor, I intend to maintain a supportive relationship with him as he transitions into adulthood, and offer guidance and assistance as he sets goals and overcomes challenges.

During today’s mental health awareness camp at katorataal, Gwalior we met a 70-year-old retired government servant who feels unloved by his family and struggles with loneliness. We also encountered a 20-year-old boy who is feeling suicidal after failing to clear the NEET exam, leaving him in a state of hopelessness. Additionally, we spoke with a young man who hasn’t slept well for the past year and a half since his father’s death, and since then, he hasn’t felt an affectionate connection with anyone. Meeting these individuals, along with others facing similar issues, underscored the importance of our presence and the value of listening to and couseling them. we conducted a rapid depression test with the following results: 38% of participants reported a loss of interest, 13% had sleeping issues, 31% experienced a consistent low mood, 31% faced digestive problems, 75% felt irritable, 50% had difficulties in focusing, 55% experienced hopelessness, 25% had a change in appetite, 38% felt lonely, and 19% reported suicidal thoughts. These findings underscore the importance of addressing mental health issues within our community.
